Occupations which still exist in Mauritius

In today’s time, the amount of the Mauritian’s monthly revenue contains at least 4 figures. A large number of Mauritians are employed by local or foreign companies established in Mauritius. We are living in the age of technology. However, some occupations that do not require academic qualifications or computer literacy still exist throughout the island. The jobs rather require passion, know-how and sometimes even physical efforts.

    Cobblers
There no longer are people who would manufacture shoes by hand in Mauritius, but some cobblers can still be relied on for the replacement of a sole or to sew back a shoe that seems to be falling apart. Two such cobblers are currently known by passengers and passers-by at the Victoria bus station at Port Louis. Using traditional tools, they have acquired much success.

    Sellers of frozen desserts
If you asked those around you where you could eat the best ice creams on the island, no international brand would be suggested to you. Two names of artisan ice cream selling businesses would be mentioned.  Residents of Port Louis would tell you about Bhai Hamid and those of Rose Hill about Vona Corona.

During the month of December, when Mauritius is bathing under the summer sun, a seller of artisan ice cream or of “glaçon râpé” in the streets are really seen as heroes. The “glaçon râpé” is made of grated plain ice over which strawberry, almond and/or tamarind syrup is poured.

Of course, sundaes are available in different flavours are available nowadays, pleasing both the eyes and the palate. However, the creaminess and the taste of artisan ice cream are unique. You should try for yourself.

    Watchmakers
Having to use a small screwdriver and an enlarging optical instrument, the work of the watchmaker requires much meticulousness. Since wall clocks are lighter than before and that they are more modern, watchmakers seldom receive any request for reparations. The only requests they nowadays receive from customers are to change the batteries in their wristwatches.

    Bicycle repairmen
Even though many Mauritians have cars, there still are those people who prefer moving about on their bicycles. This is seen in many villages in Mauritius. You surely know what to do in case of a punctured tyre, And in the case of a bent wheel? This is one of the times when you would need a bicycle repairman.

    Electrical appliance repairmen
In an era where one immediately considers purchasing another one when an appliance begins to show signs of damage, there are some people in Mauritius who fix electrical appliances. Some have a small workshop while others even go to customers’ houses.
